Marketing vs Selling

Selling is marketing, but marketing is not selling. Sadly, many people confuse marketing with selling.

marketing vs selling

Actually, the goal of marketing is to stimulate interest and demand for your product or service and sometimes where there was none before.

Wikipedia Definition of Selling
Selling is offering to exchange an item of value for a different item. The original item of value being offered may be either tangible or intangible.
The second item, usually money, is most often seen by the seller as being of equal or greater value than that being offered for sale.

Regardless, if you sell a product or service, you should always be marketing both to current customers and prospects. Not marketing on regular basis does not lead to a sustainable business.

Wikipedia Definition of Marketing
Marketing is the process of communicating the value of a product or service to customers, for the purpose of selling that product or service.

Your goal of marketing is to talk about the benefits and the “experience’’ you deliver in such a way that it sparks the desire in customers and prospects that they just have to have it.

You make the sale by asking your customer or prospect to purchase your product or service after you have created a demand and they want it.

Don’t forget that it is easier to sell to a current customer than to a prospect.
