FTP from Windows Explorer

Don’t have an ftp program? You can use the Windows Explorer as ftp program.

  • Open your Windows Explorer by pressing the Windows key and E
  • Now your are usually at your C drive and the address bar says c:
  • To access your ftp site all you have to do is replace the c: with ftp://yourwebsite.com and a pop up menu will ask you for the login info: user name and password.
  • Enter that information and you will be logged in at your site’s root directory
  • Now you can simply move files from your computer to the ftp directory.

This is very handy.

FTP from Windows Explorer — 2 Comments

  1. Hello Marlies,

This used to work great with Windows 2000. It appears to have been mostly disabled, or works very poorly with XP. For example, it’s almost impossible to make it ask you for a user name and password. It simply says that you don’t have access to the remote directory you’re trying to get to. (I haven’t tried it with Vista or 7). Do you know of any plugins for Windows XP that will restore the excellent FTP functionality that Windows 2000 used to have?

    Thank you,
    Robbie

    • I always used it with Windows XP, haven’t tried in in Windows 7 yet. In XP it never gave me any trouble. Sorry, I don’t know of any plugin that would help you.
